When we want to get to know someone and are looking to get a deeper relationship, we must find ways that will draw that person into our lives. The same thing happens with the Holy Spirit, there are things that we do that the scriptures teach us that grieve the Holy Spirit. In this passage from Ephesians we get a clear and very practical picture of things that we do that grieve the person of the Holy Spirit.
One of the roles of the Holy Spirit in our lives is to be a new beginning of our relationship with God where we grow and we learn, and in the process, we change and become new. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come (2 Corinthians 5:17, NASB95).
In this short message I talk about beginning this process of learning to be careful with what comes out of our mouths, because if we are speaking negatively of people that God loves, we are grieving the Holy Spirit.
“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:29–32, NASB95)
